Refurbishment of a 300 sqm heritage villa belonging to the former Madam Soong Mei-Ling, located in the gated community of the Meihua Garden in Shanghai.
Villa 29 originally built in 1935 was designed in iconic British style, displaying a degree of sumptuousness.
The renovation project is aimed to achieve a contemporary reinterpretation of the building, while putting emphasis on preserving original details and paying tribute to the heritage. The building’s history and its uses remain evident in the beams of the ceilings, the patina of the floors and the overall façade.
Traditional European elements such as herringbone parquets, bespoke boiserie in combination with Chinese antiques and modern Italian furniture fit snugly, adding an unexpected depth and character to this exceptional residence, manifesting seemingly opposing spirits of traditional elegancy and refined modernity, recalling the stories about the past and the present.
